Seminar/Symposia

  1. Under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, the Department of Mass Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) at the Central University of Punjab organized an invited lecture on the theme of "Broadcasting: Then and Now". The keynote speaker for this programme was Mr. Rishi Nagar, Senator, University of Calgary, Canada and News Director, Red FM, Canada.

At the outset, Prof. Vinod Kumar Garg, Dean Student Welfare and HoD, Dept. of MCMS, welcomed the participants. While introducing the keynote speaker, he stated that Mr. Rishi Nagar is a teacher and a journalist and is presently the News Director at Red FM 106.7, a South Asian radio station in Calgary.

In his keynote address, Mr. Rishi Nagar stated that broadcasting has always been considered as a mainstream medium to disseminate information for the welfare of society. This medium has evolved over a period of time and with the introduction of Frequency Modulation (FM), the local news stories were also given due importance to establish a connection with the local audience.

He underlined that during the times of the Amplitude Modulation (AM) era, the famous radio announcers of AIR like Ameen Sayani and others had excellent communication skills, the ability to generate original ideas, a clear voice, a broad range of interests, good research and interviewing skills and confidence in their ability. People love to listen to them because of their unique style and research-based, meaningful content. But currently, the modern broadcasting industry is facing the challenge of a degradation in the quality of their content because of the sensationalization of news stories and a lack of research in programme preparation.

Mr. Rishi Nagar stated that broadcasting will always remain an interesting profession, and the evolution of new media technologies is redefining its role and boundaries. He shared his experiences of working as a radio presenter and motivated budding journalists to develop the habit of reading books, polish their art of storytelling and understand their audience requirements to achieve success in this field.

Prof. Amandeep Kaur, Dean, School of Information and Communication Studies, expressed her gratitude towards the invited speaker. She gave a formal vote of thanks towards the end of the programme. Dr. Rubal Kanozia, Dr. Chhavi Garg, Dr. Paraveer Singh, Dr. Mahesh Meena, and Public Relations Officer Mr. Robin Jindal was present on this occasion. Students and research scholars of the department actively participated in this programme.
